The road warrior of the Winnipeg Goldeyes pitching staff was back at it again Wednesday night. Winnipeg starter Matt Rusch led the Goldeyes to a 7-0 win over the St. Paul Saints at Midway Stadium. Thanks to the Wichita Wingnuts beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats, Winnipeg picked up a game in the American Associations wild card race and now trail Gary by 2 ½ games. Combined with Tuesday nights 7-0 win, its the fourth time in franchise history the Goldeyes have posted back-to-back shutouts and first time since 2003. Rusch, who improved to 5-0 on the road and lowered his ERA to 2.38 away from Shaw Park with the win, gave up just three hits in the game for his second career complete-game shutout. In fact, St. Paul never had a runner in scoring position in the contest. He fanned nine, which is a season-high for him. “Every game right now is big and he knows that,” Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea said of his starter. “He built off Salamidas start last night. He was getting strike one and throwing his fastball down in the zone.” Winnipeg broke the game open early with a five-run second inning. Ryan Scoma and Ray Sadler each walked to lead off the inning. Scoma score on a Josh Mazzola single, while Casey Haerther singled in Sadler. Mazzola then scored on a Luis Alen fielders choice. A double from Kevin Moesquit chased St. Paul starter Dylan Thomas from the game. Alen would then score on a Tyler Graham sac fly and Fehlandt Lentini singled to score Moesquit. In total, Winnipeg sent all nine batters to the plate and scored the five runs on four hits. “We got on the board early and kept that lead. It allows our starter to get a groove,” Vermilyea said. “Our hitters did a great job. We werent swinging at balls and were making them throw strikes.” An inning later, Haerther singled in Mazzola to increase Winnipegs lead to 6-0. The Goldeyes finished the scoring in the fourth inning when Graham, who singled before stealing second and third base, came in to score on a Yurendell de Caster chopper to short. “You have to put the pressure on the other team and make them make plays,” Vermilyea said of Winnipegs active base runners. “None of St. Pauls pitchers were quick getting the ball to home plate.” Offensively, Haerther paced Winnipeg with three hits in the game and also had two RBI. As a team, the Goldeyes had five stolen bases. Thomas suffered the loss, dropping to 1-6 on the season. Winnipeg will try for the series win in the four-game set Thursday night. Justin Schultz scored with the man advantage at 9:01 of the third period and the Edmonton Oilers earned a 2-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday. David Perron and Taylor Hall had the assists on Schultzs ninth goal of the season as part of his third multi-point game of the season. "Yeah, it was a good road effort for us," Shultz said. "We battled hard all game." Matt Hendricks opened the scoring at 6:43 of the first to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead. Boyd Gordon and Schultz had the assists on Hendricks fifth goal of the season. The goal was his first since Feb. 3, and third with Edmonton after being acquired from Nashville on Jan. 15. Hendricks outskated Hurricanes defenceman Ryan Murphy to the puck behind the Carolina net and attempted to pass it back to Edmonton centre Anton Lander. The puck deflected off Hurricanes defenceman Jay Harrisons stick as he trailed to defend on the play and the puck ended up behind Khudobin to give Edmonton the early lead. Edmonton goalie Ben Scrivens made 29 saves for the win. "Hes been great," Hendricks said of Scrivens performance. "Our tandem (of goalies) has been outstanding. Since I got here, goaltending has been number one, the backbone of this team, and it continued again tonight." Khudobin made 31 saves for the Hurricanes while the Oilers dominated play throughout the early part of the first period. Carolinas Jordan Staal tied it at 1-1 with 17.2 seconds remaining in the opening period as his brother Eric Staal and defenceman Justin Faulk helped set up the play. It was Staals 14th goal of the season and extended his point streak to six games, giving him thrree goals and six assists during that span.dddddddddddd Staals shot attempt was deflected high toward Scrivens after it caromed of Perrons stick as he tried to block it. As Scrivens effort to slap the puck away with his blocker was ineffective, Staal batted it past him and into the net to tie the game. "It was a great team effort," Oilers coach Dallas Eakins said. "I thought our penalty kill sparked us. Theres a lot of sacrifice out there blocking those shots and it really got our bench ignited, and finally our power play was able to chip in and win us the game." Edmonton finished 1 for 4 on the power play and Carolina was 0 for 3. The Hurricanes continued ineffectiveness with the power play left coach Kirk Muller struggling to explain it. "Weve changed personnel around, tried guys in different positions, but at the end of the day, its just not getting results," Muller said. "Obviously, it hasnt been there. At the end of the day, you just (gotta) get the job done." Despite the loss, the Hurricanes are trying to stay positive. "Its frustrating," Jordan Staal said. "Theres times when we play so well and do a lot of good things, playing smart and doing those things. Then there are times when its just not working. Its frustrating for sure." Notes: Hurricanes forward Radek Dvorak did not return to play in the third period, suffering an upper body injury. ...
