MALELANE, South Africa -- John Daly will play in the European Tours Alfred Dunhill Championship this week as he comes back from elbow surgery. The two-time major winner is in the field at Leopard Creek Golf Club near Kruger National Park in northern South Africa for only his second tournament since an operation to repair a shattered tendon in his right elbow. The American made a promising start at last months BMW Masters on his return to golf before falling away over the weekend to finish 5 over and in a tie for 48th. "I had my surgery done in July and have only played one tournament in four months," Daly said Monday. "Im really fresh and I want to play. I dont want to waste the end of this year. Id like to get something going for the end of this year so I can get on track for next year." Daly also said that he had seen elephants near where hes staying on the edge of Kruger and "woke up to a cobra this morning." "For us being from America you see that kind of stuff in the movies and seeing it live is just incredible," he said. Daly returns to South Africa for the first time since the early 1990s, when he won a couple of tournaments to kick-start his career. "This is where I got my start," Daly said. "I played really good on the (South African) Sunshine Tour for 1987 through to 1990 and it got my career going. I played really well over here and it got my confidence going, so that when I went back home it actually helped me get my tour card." Its coming up to a decade since the 1991 PGA Championship winner and 95 British Open champion won on the U.S. or European tours, but he showed promising signs at the BMW Masters in China by opening with a 68. He goes up against 2011 Masters winner Charl Schwartzel and Brendon de Jonge this week, but the Leopard Creek course could suit him. "Its a ball strikers golf course," Daly said after his first look at the layout. "Youve got to hit the fairways. And the greens are tricky. Its the kind of course where youd almost prefer a 20-footer to a 10-footer on these greens." The Alfred Dunhill is the second of three straight tournaments in South Africa to start the new European season and the 2014 Race to Dubai. Morten Orum Madsen won the South African Open on Sunday, while Henrik Stenson, Justin Rose, Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Schwartzel and De Jonge are part of a 30-man field at the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City on Dec. 5-8. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Boston Red Sox placed right fielder Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list for the second time this season. Both times its been because of a strained right hamstring. He was sidelined from the start of the season until he was activated April 24. Outfielder Daniel Nava was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. Also, designated hitter David Ortiz and first baseman Mike Napoli were not listed in Saturdays lineup because of injuries. The flurry of activity took place before the Red Sox played Tampa Bay, with Boston trying to end an eight-game losing streak. Manager John Farrell said Ortiz has a calf injury. Napoli is still feeling the flu-like symptoms that sidelined him Wednesday and Thursday in addition to hamstring, calf and finger issues. "Were beat up," Farrell said. Saturday was a planned day off for Ortiz to deal with his injury. "This is what his situation called for," Farrell said. Napoli could miss a few days. "I cant say this is a one-day thing," Farrell said. "It might be more days needed than that, and were hopeful to avoid a down time on the DL as well with him.dddddddddddd" Victorino aggravated a hamstring injury from spring training running to first base in the ninth inning of Friday nights 1-0 loss to Tampa Bay. "We recognize where were at," Farrell said. "You have to separate the individual from the teams win-loss record and the streak were on. Its compounded by the stretch that were in, but at the same time, you cant push a guy past a point where its detrimental for him and the risk-reward bar is swayed into the risk category." Victorino missed 22 games early in the season. "We think, through the exams so far, its not as severe as the injury at spring training, but in combination with hamstring and just overall physical ailments that hes battling right now, the two-week break is needed," Farrell said. In 21 games this season, Victorino hit .242 with one homer and 10 RBIs. Nava began the season with Boston. He hit .149 with two homers and three RBIs in 17 games before being sent to Pawtucket on April 22. Last season with Boston, Nava batted .303 with 12 homers and 66 RBIs in 134 games. ' ' '
