Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Drew Tate had a pair of rushing touchdowns and the Calgary Stampeders held off the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 20-16 on Sunday to win the Grey Cup. Bo Levi Mitchell was named the games Most Outstanding Player after throwing for 334 yards on 25-of-34 passing with an interception. Eric Rogers had 108 yards receiving for the Stamps, who won their seventh Grey Cup title and first since 2008. Jon Cornish, the CFLs leading rusher, was held in check for just 25 yards on the ground. We had a very good week of preparation, said Calgary coach John Hufnagel. Hamilton had a lot of moxie to get back into the game. Zach Collaros led a furious rally for the Ticats, throwing for 342 yards with a touchdown in the loss. Brandon Banks had an 80-yard punt return negated late in the fourth due to a clipping penalty that would have given Hamilton the lead. He hauled in two passes for 81 yards with a touchdown. The Tiger-Cats have lost back-to-back Grey Cups. They fell to Saskatchewan in the final last season. We got a good young football team, said Hamilton coach Kent Austin. Its not always going to go our way. Thats how it is sometimes. Hamilton trailed by 13 entering the fourth and methodically marched down the field for a field goal from Justin Medlock early in the quarter. Delvin Breaux then intercepted Mitchell on Calgarys subsequent possession, but the Ticats settled for another field goal from Medlock, a 12-yarder that cut the deficit to 20-13 with 5:35 left in the game. Nic Grigsby was stuffed on consecutive plays from inside the 5 before Medlock made it a one-touchdown game. The Hamilton defense forced another stop and got the ball back with over four minutes left. Collaros hit Luke Tasker for 22 yards and converted a 19-yard pass to Bakari Grant to move the ball to the Calgary 24. The Stampeders did not break, and Medlock knocked down his third kick of the quarter to make it 20-16. Hamilton forced another punt and looked to take its first lead of the night. Banks picked up the rolling kick, backtracked a few yards and bolted down the sideline for a touchdown, but it was nullified after the penalty early in the return. We had other opportunities to win. Until I see the play Im not going to comment further, Austin said of the return. The Ticats had to go 98 yards from there and managed to make it to their 54. Collaros was hit on his final throw as the ball fell incomplete and Calgary held on for the championship. We had to fight through a lot of injuries this year. This (Grey Cup) is for Calgary, this is for you, Mitchell yelled to the crowd after receiving his MOP award. Hamilton looked to be playing for field position to start the contest, but Grigsby had the ball knocked loose at midfield and it was eventually recovered deep in their territory, leading to a punt. Because of the near turnover, Calgary flipped the field and Mitchell fired a quick strike to a wide open Rogers for a gain of 28 yards to the Hamilton 27. Later in the drive, the Stamps called for a screen right off the center to Nik Lewis, who sprinted up field before leaping into a pair of defenders and getting wrestled down at the 1. Tate, the backup quarterback, then plunged in from a yard out on the following play to give the Stamps an early 7-0 lead. Calgary added on with a seven-play drive that was capped early in the second with another 1-yard score from Tate. Mitchell and Simon Charbonneau-Campeau hooked up for a 28-yard completion to the Ticats 36. Brandon Stewart was flagged for pass interference in the back of the end zone which set up Tate, who ran up the left side of the line until finding some daylight for the touchdown. Hamiltons most promising drive of the half to that point stalled at the Stamps 19, and the field goal attempt was blocked by Demonte Bolden. It was a great team effort blocking that kick, said Hufnagel. It was important because we marched right down and scored. Mitchell immediately went deep to Rogers for a 43-yard pickup, but the TiCatss defense held up and Rene Paredes booted an 11-yard field goal to make it 17-0. Hamilton had an answer, however, as Collaros tossed a 45-yard dart to Banks for a touchdown that cut the deficit to 17-7 at halftime. Paredes supplied the only points of the third quarter with his 20-yard field goal that made it 20-7 with 4:20 remaining. Game Notes Hamilton last won the Grey Cup in 1999 ...
